Child Bereavement Charity in association with Buckinghamshire New University
This comprehensive course is suitable for anyone who works with, or wishes to deepen their understanding of the needs of, bereaved children. The course aims to enable trainees to develop a range of techniques to work effectively with bereaved children and young people according to each child or young person’s individual needs.
Overview
All units have 3 skills heading, Personal (Self Awareness), Theory (Knowledge and Understanding) and Skills (Application of Learning Practice). These vary slightly from unit to unit. Facilitation and teaching will aim to be responsive to the particular needs of individual trainees as they are identified, therefore some learning aims and objectives cannot be anticipated in advance.
All units may involve some input from visitors on related matters.
Unit 1 – Introduction to supporting bereaved children and young people
Unit 2 – Models of child development and application of learning in practice
Unit 3 – Working safely and creatively with children and young people
Unit 4 – Supporting children and young people in the context of their family and culture
Unit 5 – The importance of endings and practice review

Content
Example Subject Matter:
Unit 1 – Introduction to Supporting Bereaved Children and Young People
Personal – Self Awareness
- Identify personal strengths and areas needing support and development
- Identify personal learning goals
Theory – Knowledge and Understanding
- Historical overview of models of grieving
- The needs of bereaved children
Skills – Application of Learning in Practice
- Introduce use of Learning Journals as medium for reflective learning and record of professional development
- Develop active listening skills
Unit 2 – Models of Child Development and Application of Learning in Practice
Personal – Self Awareness
- Identify personal learning goals for this unit
- Understanding our ‘inner child’
Theory – Knowledge and Understanding
- Child Protection
- Developmental stages and tasks of childhood and adolescence
Skills – Application of Learning in Practice
- Use of different creative materials (e.g. crayons, collage) and methods (e.g. story telling) to facilitate self-exploration and self expression
- Development of multiplicity of skills and consolidation of listening and feedback skills
Unit 3 – Working Safely and Creatively With Children and Young People
Personal – Self Awareness
- Reflections on learning from last unit
- Awareness of the importance of self-care
Theory – Knowledge and Understanding
- Working Safely: relevant codes of ethics and practice and law
- Traumatic bereavement
Skills – Application of Learning in Practice
- Alternative ways of establishing personal learning goals
- Practice of a variety of creative ways of working/supporting children and young people
Unit 4 – Supporting Children and Young People in the Context of Their Family and Culture
Personal – Self Awareness
- Reflect on personal history and experiences and their potential impact on this work
- Focus on best means of self-care over this period
Theory – Knowledge and Understanding
- Definitions of the family
- The family in context (e.g. social and cultural)
Skills – Application of Learning in Practice
- Use of meditation/relaxation for self support and supporting others
- Application of tools for assessment of risk
Unit 5 – The Importance of Endings and Practice Review
Personal – Self Awareness
- Formal self/peer and tutor assessment
- Recognition of personal achievements and challenges overcome
Theory – Knowledge and Understanding
- Understanding of the importance of addressing endings as a professional and their impact in context (e.g. here within the group, with a family, with individual children)
- The rest of the content/knowledge for this unit will be determined by trainees individual learning
needs and areas identified by tutors as ‘gaps’ in learning
Skills – Learning Applied in Practice
- Simple body work (e.g. hand massage) for relaxation and self-care
- Facilitating rituals to mark endings
What will I learn?
The outcomes of this short course are to facilitate students to:
- Critically assess models of child development and their application in context of bereavement support.
- Demonstrate the ability to reflect critically on working safely and creatively with children and young people
- Reflect upon and evaluate the significance of the family and cultural context of supporting children and young people
- Articulate the significance of in relation to working with bereaved children and young people
- Demonstrate the ability to reflect critically on their owen practice and that of others working with bereaved children and young people
Entry requirements
This course is open to anyone who works with, or wishes to deepen their understanding of the needs of, bereaved children. There are no formal entry requirements, however trainees will be required to be in a supportive working relationship with children/young people from Unit 4 onwards of the course (paid or voluntary). The opportunity to bring practice experience into the training environment enriches the learning experience of the whole group.
