Is this course suitable for me?

This 30 credit module is suitable for health care practitioners providing care for patients involved in trauma within any environment.

Overview

This module represents a short course for health care practitioners to study the care of patients requiring care following trauma. It will enable you to enhance your skills of critical enquiry and evaluate the principles and practices of trauma care. In respect of varying problems, undifferentiated need and levels of dependency appraise the need for timely assessment and appropriate interventions of patients requiring trauma care.

Content

Through negotiation with your mentor you will identify and explore your development. Taught sessions will explore related theory providing you with an opportunity to apply this to your practice.

The module will include exploration of:

  • The assessment and interventions required for patients who have an altered physical status, altered psychological status, and altered social status requiring trauma care.
  • The assessment and interventions required for patients suffering from trauma, including family and patient centred care.
  • The assessment and interventions required for patients who present with problems involving the cardiovascular, neurological, respiratory, musculoskeletal and abdominal systems.
  • The roles of other members of the team in the care of the trauma patient.

This content will include people at any point on the life span continuum and consider culture, ethnicity, religion, gender, family influences and multidisciplinary team involvement.

What will I learn?

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:

  • Critically appraise and integrate evidence based knowledge to trauma practice.
  • Critically analyse and evaluate the evidence base that supports the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of trauma care.
  • Demonstrate clinical skills and competence to meet the needs of the trauma patient.
  • Discuss effective trauma management within the context of the practitioners’ professional discipline, incorporating local and National policies.

  • Service improvement
  • Quality, Equality and diversity
  • Health & well being (1 – 8).

Teaching and learning

Teaching and Learning strategies will facilitate development and consolidation of clinical assessment, professional and management skills. A variety of strategies will be employed including; assigned reading; key-note lectures to provide depth of insight into specific content; enquiry based learning; development of learning contracts through clinical and link facilitators. You will be encouraged to consider the central issues to your own area of practice and to debate both current provision and future developments. Blackboard VLE will be used to encourage group discussion.

Entry requirements

  1. Registered health care professional with minimum 6 months experience.
  2. 60 level 5 credits (or equivalent)
  3. Support of the clinical manager and a suitably qualified mentor/assessor
  4. Opportunity to work outside usual clinical area, if necessary, to gain specific clinical competence

Further opportunities

The 30 credits gained from this module can also be used towards a ‘Top Up’ Degree by enrolling on the BSc (Hons) Health Care Practice (Trauma Care). In order to complete this degree you can automatically transfer these credits on enrolment within a two year period, otherwise application through the CATs Committee will apply.
