Is this course suitable for me?
The programme has been developed to cater for the development needs of experienced, practicing lecturers, teachers and other educational professionals responsible for delivering, organising or managing, technology-enhanced learning from within schools, colleges, universities or commercial training organisations.
Participants may exit the course at any of the three levels (certificate, diploma or master’s level) as suits their individual needs. Completion of all three levels in order, is required to achieve the full MSc award.
Overview
In view of the exciting and innovative developments taking place within technology-enhanced Learning (t-eL), opportunities for professional development in all aspects of teaching and learning have become paramount for lecturers, teachers and commercial trainers.
Within the University we have been successfully using t-eL approaches across all of our undergraduate programmes for more than a decade and have developed specialist knowledge in the use and development of t-eL within all types of courses.
What is the MSc technology-enhanced Learning (t-eL)?
The term technology-enhanced Learning is now being widely used to encompass those areas of educational study that would have previously been described as blended-Learning and e-Learning. The MSc has been developed from previous postgraduate courses in blended-Learning and e-Learning and represents the need for a new type of programme that incorporates both areas in a unifying package.
The MSc technology-enhanced Learning encompasses the embedded use of learning technologies within face-to-face student/teacher environments, as well as distance, part-time and work-based education.
The MSc technology-enhanced Learning focuses on how we can develop good pedagogical practice to enhance the design and delivery methods for teaching and learning face-to-face, online or work-based using a range of technology augmented methodologies.
Structure
Certificate level
The certificate level of the MSc.programme is made up of three 10 week modules:
1. Developing Methodologies in technology-enhanced Learning
2. Designing Effective Resources in technology-enhanced Learning
3. The Development and Delivery of technology-enhanced Learning
Module one
Introduces participants to technology-enhanced Learning methodologies, exploring issues of curriculum design, learning styles, learner support and techniques for course management. This module also addresses codes of conduct and ethical issues surrounding technology-enhanced Learning.
Module two
Examines the relationship between the teaching and learning process and the design of learning resources in participants’ own subject areas. Participants explore the processes underpinning successful learning in a technology-enhanced Learning environment and investigate the potential of learning resources to support these processes.
Module three
Considers how a tutor teaches course content, supports, maintains contact, monitors progress and provides feedback to the learner through the use of technology-enhanced Learning.
Diploma level
The diploma level of the MSc programme is made up of three 10 week modules:
4. Assessment and Evaluation in technology-enhanced Learning
5. Developing and Implementing the technology-enhanced Learning Architecture
6. Managing Change in technology-enhanced Learning
Module four
Introduces participants to the use of technology-enhanced Learning assessment and evaluation. Participants critically evaluate learning and teaching theory in relation to assessment strategies and management within a technology-enhanced Learning course and provide knowledge to apply computer based assessment in a range of technology-enhanced Learning situations.
Module five
Provides the knowledge and understanding required to implement and manage technology-enhanced Learning systems online. Participants are introduced to the management of web servers, web development tools and associated databases and technology-enhanced Learning applications.
Module six
Introduces a range of methods to help with the introduction of technology-enhanced learning in to the participant’s workplace in ways which encourage both tutors and students to embrace them. The emphasis is on the consideration of methods which are both theoretically underpinned, practical and provide a structured planned management of organisational change from the technology-enhanced Learning perspective.
Master’s level
At the masters level there is a single module in two parts. The first part is the taught element (Research Methods), which aims to equip participants with the resources need to conduct a formal research project and to develop the knowledge and skills required for successful completion of the dissertation.
In the second part participants are required to work independently to plan and complete a technology-enhanced Learning dissertation, based on an innovative intervention in a technology-enhanced learning environment.
Entry requirements
Applicants to the programme will normally meet the following criteria:
•have a first degree or equivalent
•demonstrate at interview their ability to successfully complete a programme of study at masters level
•have regular teaching/student learning support responsibilities
•have the support of their line manager
•be familiar and comfortable with basic ‘office’ software packages and file management.
