This module is for those working in community/public health and welfare, or any field of public service, who wish to advance their practice and career progression.
Overview
The module will prepare you to effectively read and appraise public health literature. It will cover the principles of epidemiology and introduce you to the statistical methods used to measure patterns of health & disease.
Content
- The purpose, goals, scope and uses of epidemiology
- Measures of health and disease frequency
- Categories of data
- Measures of central tendency
- Basic differences between observational and experimental studies
- The purpose of and method used within ecological, cross-sectional, case-control, and cohort studies
- Measures of association
- The range of health information sources available to assess community health needs
Entry requirements
Applicants will, normally, have 120 credits at Level 5 (completed equivalent of year 2 in an undergraduate programme) and be working in a relevant area of health, community and/or public service.
