Is this course suitable for me?

This short 30 credit module will be of interest to people working with young children in variety of settings such as nurseries, playgroups and health clinics.

Overview

This module will extend the students’ knowledge of the emotional needs of young children. The focus will be on the importance of early attachment to a first carer, the consequences of poor attachment on later development, brain development, the ability to learn, emotional intelligence and the ability to form relationships with others. This will include the effects of separation, the effects of trauma/life events upon children’s learning and development, recovery and levels of resilience. The students will further explore the importance of working closely with parents/first carers and multi-disciplinary teams and the use of the Key Persons supporting children in different settings. Students will be encouraged to reflect upon their own practice and that of the setting within which they are working.

  • Identifying and promoting professional partnerships with multi-disciplinary teams

  • Analysis of the effects of positive working relationships upon the emotional needs of young children
  • Working within the legislative framework protecting children and young people.

What will I learn?

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:

  1. Discuss and review attachment theories
  2. Critically analyse their work with multi-disciplinary teams
  3. Explain the effects of attachment and poor attachment on the development of the brain
  4. Reflect on and evaluate their own practice in relation to meeting the individual emotional needs of children
  5. Implement strategies for responding to individual needs within the current legislative framework

Clinical practice

Teaching and learning

Lectures initially to provide the foundation of knowledge, seminars, visiting speakers, practical experiences including presentations, research, visiting learning centre, resources and community resources, group, colleague and tutor/student discussions, e-mail, blackboard, internet, work based learning that links to the summative assessment.

Assessment

You will produce a Power Point presentation of a case study, followed by a written discussion using the case study identified in the presentation to illustrate your knowledge and understanding of the social and emotional needs of children. The presentation will generate opportunities for sustained peer and tutor feedback and enhanced student reflection prior to the production of the written work component.

Entry requirements

Working in a practice area with minimum 6 months experience in an appropriate setting is required

  • 120 level 5 credits (or equivalent)
  • Support of your manager
  • Opportunity to work outside usual practice area, if necessary, to gain specific clinical competence
