This module is suitable for health care professionals who are involved in management and care for people in a gastrointestinal care environment.
Overview
This module aims to further develop your skills and knowledge in relation to altered body image and sexuality within the field of Gastrointestinal Nursing. The module also aims to support you as you manage patients with specific psychological problems.
Content
This module will explore:
- normal/altered body image
- exploration of self
- normal sexual function
- sexual dysfunction
- taking a sexual history
- process of adaptation/adjustment
- communication/counselling skills
- psychological disorders associated with sexuality and body image
- health promotion.
What will I learn?
On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:
- to critically explore issues relating to self and personhood of the nurse
- to explore and analyse issues relating to body image and altered body image in relation to the treatment and management of gastrointestinal disorders
- to explore and evaluate key issues relating to sexual health and sexual dysfunction in relation to gastrointestinal disorders
- to demonstrate a clear ability to undertake a patient history with a sexual dysfunction and/or altered body image.
Teaching and learning
This module will consist of a variety of teaching and learning strategies relevant to the broad ranging and complex nature of the subject material. This will therefore include taught lectures, student–led seminars, group work, discussion and debate, web -based learning, use of audio visual aids.
You will be encouraged to share and reflect on practice and management decisions based on clinical situations. Networking and exploration of wider critical care forums will also be promoted.
Entry requirements
- Registered professional qualification (e.g. nursing)
- 60 level 5 credits (or equivalent)
- Minimum six months experience in a relevant practice area
