Is this course suitable for me?
This module is suitable for health care practitoners working with children or adults when they have substantial dealings with children.
Overview
The aim of this module is to evaluate the theory and practice of child protection in the safeguarding of children and families. This will be done by examining strategy, policy and the role of the inter-professional team in safeguarding children and their families
Content
The module content will reflect the key themes of up to date child protection practice and will include the following;
- Government strategies, policies and frameworks of assessment relating to safeguarding children
- Identification and categories of abuse
- The roles of individual professionals
- Domestic Abuse
- Fabricated and induced illness
- Mental health and vulnerable children influences
- Cultural influences
- Age ranges to include adolescence
- Institutional abuse
- Paedophilia and sexual abuse
What will I learn?
On successful completion of the module, the student will be able to:
- Identify individual, family, community and societal risk factors in development and health and evaluate the influence of these in safeguarding children
- Identify pre disposing factors and critically discuss strategies for dealing with children at risk
- Understand and critically evaluate the system of legislative and procedural frameworks to promote the safeguarding of children and their families.
- Demonstrate a critical awareness of the systems in place to predict, identify, manage and prevent abuse.
- Critically evaluate the roles of professionals working across a range of clinical settings
The 15 credits gained from this module can also be used towards a ‘Top Up’ Degree by enrolling on the BSc (Hons) Health Care Practice (Child). In order to complete this degree you can automatically transfer these credits on enrolment within a two year period, otherwise application through the CATs Committee will apply.
Knowledge and skills framework (KSF)
This module will address elements of the following KSF’s dimensions:
Communication; Personal and people development; Heath safety and security; Service improvement; Quality, Equality and diversity; Health & well being (1 – 8)
Entry requirements
- Registered health care professional with minimum 6 months experience in a relevant field.
- 60 level 5 credits (or equivalent)
