Is this course suitable for me?

This module is suitable for health care professionals who are involved in management and care for people in a gastrointestinal care environment.

Overview

This module replaces the previously offered Promotion of Continence and Management of Incontinence module and is now worth 30 credits. It enables you to explore the issues relating to bladder and bowel management. It will provide you with the opportunity to critically reflect and examine current practice with an integrated approach thus improve or regain an acceptable quality of life and to cope with long term illnesses through the provision of expert patient care.

Content

This module will explore:

  • anatomy and physiology of urinary and GI tract
  • structure and function of the pelvic floor
  • normal/abnormal urination/defaecation
  • causes and prevalence of urinary/faecal incontinence
  • bladder/bowel dysfunction
  • assessment
  • digital rectal examination
  • medical/surgical management
  • pharmacology
  • dietary interventions
  • rectal irrigation
  • needs of children and the less-abled and older adult
  • anorectal physiology
  • urodynamics
  • patients experience
  • health education/promotion
  • support networks.
  • What will I learn?

    On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:

    • Be proactive in initiating, effectively using and critically evaluating health education strategies for people with bladder and bowel problems.
    • Be able to educate carers and health professionals to enhance the quality of care and education provided for this client group.
    • Critically analyse and evaluate the scope and effectiveness of the service currently provided for this client group.
    • Use reflective skills to make the decision making process and rationales underpinning the provision of effective care.

    Knowledge and skills framework (KSF)

    This module will address elements of the following KSF’s dimensions:
    Communication; Personal and people development; Heath safety and security; Service improvement; Quality, Equality and diversity

    Teaching and learning

    This module will consist of a variety of teaching and learning strategies relevant to the broad ranging and complex nature of the subject material. This will therefore include taught lectures, student–led seminars, group work, discussion and debate, web-based learning, use of audio visual aids.

    You will be encouraged to share and reflect on practice and management decisions based on clinical situations. Networking and exploration of wider critical care forums will also be promoted.

    Entry requirements

    • Registered professional qualification (e.g. nursing)
    • 60 level 5 credits (or equivalent)
    • Minimum six months experience in a relevant practice area
