This module is suitable for those working in an area of community/public health and welfare, or any field of public service, who wish to advance their practice and career progression.
Overview
This module will provide students with a critical understanding of the context of public health and welfare and the principles upon which public health practice is based. It will engage students in considering inter-professional, inter-agency learning and collaborative working to achieve public health goals.
Content
- context, principles and levels of public health practice
- key areas of public health practice
- range of roles and responsibilities in public health
- influences on public health: environmental, social, biological, behavioural, cultural, technological
- the wider determinants of health and associated health inequalities
- social policy as a mechanism for change in public health
- the use of demography and population studies to assess population health and well-being
- collaborative approaches to meet the public health agenda
Entry requirements
Applicants will, normally, have 120 credits at Level 5 (completed equivalent of year 2 in an undergraduate programme) and be working in a relevant area of health, community and/or public service.
