Is this course suitable for me?
Nurse Prescribing was first introduced to Britain, following a report by Baroness Cumberledge (DH 1986). A national ‘roll out’ of training began in 1998 for all qualified District Nurses and Health Visitors. In response to changes in legislation regarding nurse prescribing and professional body requirements, the Specialist Community Health Care Nursing courses were re validated to incorporate Nurse Prescribing into two pathways of the course – Health Visiting and District Nursing. In 2006 the Nursing and Midwifery Council recommended that nurse prescribing be offered to all students on the Specialist Community Health Care Nursing courses. As a result of these recommendations from the Nursing and Midwifery Council, the Preparation for Nurse Prescribing programme can now be accessed by other community nurses, such as Specialist Community Public Health Nurses (School Nurses) and Community Children’s Nurses, enabling them
to prescribe from a limited formulary.
Overview
The course will include the following:
- Therapeutics of Nurse Prescribing
- Assessment
- History taking
- Decision making
- Ethics
- Accountability
- Pharmacology
- Legal issues
- Use of the Nurse Prescribersà Formulary
The assessment will usually take place before the Easter break. The assessment consists of a two part examination. Part A is a short answer/multiple choice paper and Part B is based on scenario context dependent questions. Support in the clinical practice area by an experienced nurse prescriber/medical prescriber will be required.
