Is this course suitable for me?

This module is suitable for qualified nurses who are working in an environment in which the development of assessment skills can be supported. You will need a facilitator for the duration of the module.

Overview

This module will enable you to develop awareness of pathophysiological processes and to examine and analyse deviation from the normal in relation to illness and injury and systematically apply new knowledge. The aim of the module is to facilitate the students’ systematic understanding and knowledge of the pathophysiological process behind illness and injury and how these processes deviate from the normal and how they affect patient’s presentations. It aims to enhance your assessment and physical examination skills through the development of your critical analysis and knowledge of pathophysiology.

What will I learn?

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the ability to interpret presenting signs and symptoms with reference to their underlying pathophysiological processes of illness and injury.
  2. Critically evaluate deviations from the normal physiological processes relating to illness and injury.
  3. Critically apply knowledge of pathophysiology to effectively assess and interpret presenting symptoms of illness and injury autonomously.
  4. Demonstrate the key elements of a comprehensive physical assessment in the performance of clinical examination skills, underpinned by current evidence.
  5. Demonstrate self-direction in assessment of patients.

The 30 credits gained from this module can also be used towards a ‘Top Up’ Degree by enrolling on the BSc (Hons) Health Care Practice. In order to complete this degree you can automatically transfer these credits on enrolment within a two year period, otherwise application through the CATs Committee will apply.

Knowledge and skills framework (KSF)

This module will address elements of the following KSF’s dimensions:

Communication; Personal and people development; Heath safety and security; Service improvement; Quality, Equality and diversity; Health & well being (1 – 8)

Teaching and learning

The pathophysiology, assessment and guided study components of this module will be delivered on alternate weeks, to enable the pathophysiology to support the assessment process. The pathophysiology of injury and illness will be taught, followed by sessions focusing on analysing this knowledge in relation to the assessment of illness and injury. These sessions will then be supported by a Guided-study session when you will be encouraged to consider the implications of this knowledge in your own areas of practice. You will be supported by an appropriate named facilitator who will act as your supervisor throughout. Formative work will be undertaken by you with your facilitator, integrating academic work into your practice. The module will be delivered utilising face to face teaching, demonstration, VLE, guided study and work in practice with a facilitator.

This module may be delivered by weekly attendance over 30 weeks or in blocks of teaching.

Entry requirements

We’ll be looking for a minimum of six months’ post-registration experience within a relevant area of practice.

  • For Level 5 study you’ll need 120 credits at Level 4 or equivalent.
  • For Level 6 study, 120 credits at Level 5 or the equivalent are required.
