Is this course suitable for me?

This module is suitable for qualified nurses who are working in an environment in which the development of assessment skills can be supported. You will need a facilitator for the duration of the module.

Overview

The aim of the module is to enable you to develop sound knowledge of pathophysiological processes and the way in which these processes deviate from the normal and affect patient presentations. It aims to enhance your assessment and physical examination skills through systematic clinical examination of body systems.

This knowledge will then be critically applied to the assessment process in relation to the musculoskeletal, respiratory, ear nose and throat and eyes, the cardiovascular, nervous and abdominal systems, the genitourinary tract and skin.

Content

This module will explore;

  • The pathophysiology of the body fluids, inflammatory response, lymphatics and immunity,
  • Special senses, blood and circulation, neural system, nutrition, endocrinology, and the bodies defence system will be taught / discussed.
  • This knowledge will then be critically applied to the assessment process in relation to the musculoskeletal, respiratory, ear nose and throat and eyes, the cardiovascular, nervous and abdominal systems, the genitourinary tract and skin.

What will I learn?

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate sound knowledge of the pathophysiological processes of illness and injury
  2. Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the deviations from the normal physiological processes relating to illness and injury.
  3. Systematically apply knowledge of pathophysiology to effectively assess and interpret presenting symptoms of illness and injury autonomously.
  4. Demonstrate the application of advanced knowledge and understanding in the performance of clinical examination skills, underpinned by current evidence.
  5. Demonstrate self-direction in effective assessment of patients.

Teaching and learning

The pathophysiology, assessment and guided study components of this module will be delivered on alternate weeks to enable the pathophysiology to support the assessment process. Alternative sessions will focus on the critical and systematic application of this knowledge in relation to assessment of illness and injury. You will be required to undertake guided study sessions in which you will be expected to consider the application of your knowledge to your own areas of practice.

The purpose of this module is to enhance practice. An important principle underpinning the approach to assessment is that it should be directly related to your real work situation. You will be asked to undertake a piece of formative work based upon a case study from practice. This will precede a formal summative case study submitted at the end of the module. The formative work will allow you to develop masters’ level thinking in evaluating a real case with the guidance of an academic lecturer. The case study should explore the assessment process related to the pathophysiology. In addition to this you will also be assessed using an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).

Entry requirements

  • Registered professional qualification (e.g. nursing)
  • 60 level 6 credits (or equivalent)
  • Normally a minimum of 2 years experience in a relevant clinical area
  • Support of the clinical manager and a suitably qualified mentor/assessor
  • Opportunity to work outside usual clinical area, if necessary, to gain specific clinical competence
