Overview

This management module aims to enable you to extend your existing management and leadership knowledge and skills and apply concepts to effectively manage the environment of care and enhance the quality of service provision.

Content

  • Economic, political, demographic and social influences on health care provision.
  • Impact of legislation and inspection on quality of care: e.g National Institute of Clinical Excellence;
  • Healthcare Commission,
  • Care Quality Commission [proposed],
  • Performance management;
  • Workforce modernisation.
  • Influence of benchmarking/gold standards/National Service Frameworks on care provision within the student’s area.
  • Patient/client empowerment in optimising clinical services.
  • Function and application of audits in care provision.
  • Funding and resource allocation;
  • Workforce planning;
  • Commissioning of services;
  • Interface of community and acute sectors in healthcare.
  • Consideration of budgetary management,
  • Negotiation, application and evaluation of budgets within cost-conscious clinical setting.
  • Skills of leadership,
  • Team building,
  • Empowering personnel within learning organisations will be explored.
  • Managing and resolving conflict and complaints,
  • Inter-professional collaboration, and organisational responses for workforce

What will I learn?

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:

  1. Critically analyse economic, social, political and demographic forces which are influencing development of health care organisations nationally and locally.
  2. Demonstrate broad and deep knowledge of the strategies employed nationally and locally to support and enhance quality of clinical care.
  3. Critically discuss the implications of current government strategies of performance management, quality assurance, funding and resource allocations within the NHS, for service delivery within their own care sector.
  4. Demonstrate professional development in applying government strategies into health care, accepting responsibility in managing the care environment.

The 30 credits gained from this module can also be used towards a ‘Top Up’ Degree by enrolling on the BSc (Hons) Health Care Practice (Award). In order to complete this degree you can automatically transfer these credits on enrolment within a two year period, otherwise application through the CATs Committee will apply.

Knowledge and skills framework (KSF)

This module will address elements of the following KSF’s dimensions:

Communication; Personal and people development; Heath safety and security; Service improvement; Quality, Equality and diversity; Health & well being (1 – 8)

Teaching and learning

The teaching methodology is work-based learning, thus there will be an emphasis on self-directed learning, with student led tutorials expected throughout the module, with the opportunity to communicate and share information through the use of VLE. Module leader will provide stimulus material via Blackboard. Blackboard discussions will also promote learning. You will be introduced to the key concepts during an induction to the module, this is then followed by a period of WBL, and you will develop and execute your learning contract with the support of the module leader and clinical mentor.

You will be expected to participate in your own organisation’s activities related to the module with structured personal and mentor-guided reflection in- and on-practice for portfolio development.

Entry requirements

Applicants should be a Registered nurse or health care practitioner with 120 level 5 credits
