Is this course suitable for me?

This module is suitable for health care professionals who are involved in management and care for people in a gastrointestinal care environment.

Overview

This module aims to develop your knowledge and skills relevant to providing care and support for people requiring nutritional support. You will develop a systematic understanding of the principles, clinical decisions and complex situations relating to nutrition and the patient with a gastrointestinal disorder thus enhancing your critical thinking in evidence based practice within this speciality.

Content

This module will explore:

  • normal A&P of the Gut
  • processes of digestion and absorption
  • nutritional assessment and screening
  • enteral and parental feeding including indications, contraindications and potential complications
  • pharmacology
  • intestinal failure
  • patients experience
  • living with a chronic illness
  • health education
  • multidisciplinary approach to care.

What will I learn?

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:

  • display an in-depth knowledge of nutrition screening and assessment methods and be able to evaluate their use in clinical practice.
  • critically review the evidence of the safety and efficacy of different methods of artificial nutrition support.
  • critically reflect upon the practitioner’s role in the care of patients requiring nutrition support.
  • identify the psychological and social impact of the requirement for home artificial nutrition support.

Teaching and learning

This module will consist of a variety of teaching and learning strategies relevant to the broad ranging and complex nature of the subject material. This will therefore include taught lectures, student–led seminars, group work, discussion and debate, web -based learning, use of audio visual aids.

You will be encouraged to share and reflect on practice and management decisions based on clinical situations. Networking and exploration of wider critical care forums will also be promoted.

Entry requirements

  • Registered professional qualification (e.g. nursing)
  • 60 level 5 credits (or equivalent)
  • Minimum six months experience in a relevant practice area
