Is this course suitable for me?

This course is aimed at nurses and allied health professionals working in advanced practice roles where the management of minor illness would contribute to patient care.

Overview

To train nurses and allied health professionals to manage minor illness in a variety of settings using an integrated approach including theoretical perspectives and supervised clinical practice.

Content

  • Consultation skills and history taking;
  • Knowledge of nursing and medical models and exploration of key components from each in order to undertake a patient history effectively;
  • Articulate strategies within individual practice that will facilitate management of uncertainty.
  • Clinical decision making and record keeping
  • Review of anatomy and physiology and associated physical examination
  • Systems will include respiratory, abdominal, ENT, skin, muscular skeletal and general survey including mental health assessment.
  • Health beliefs, health psychology and health promotion – application to practice for the management of minor illness
  • Legal and professional frameworks,
  • Accountability and clinical governance;
  • Evidence based practice and management of minor illness
  • Change management and protocol development.

What will I learn?

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:

  1. Integrate nursing and medical approaches to consultation and history taking and develop skills in clinical examination for patients presenting with minor illness and consider how this could be utilised in clinical practice consultations.
  2. Analyse the factors that may affect patient participation in their care and adopt a partnership approach to the planning and implementation of care with clients.
  3. Critically evaluate the key components necessary for the development of protocols, algorithms and guidelines for practice and demonstrate the ability to develop an algorithm for the management of a minor illness.
  4. Using a range of strategies to critically appraise the process of clinical decision making and its application in both practice and clinical governance frameworks.

The 30 credits gained from this module can also be used towards a ‘Top Up’ Degree by enrolling on the BSc (Hons) Health Care Practice. In order to complete this degree you can automatically transfer these credits on enrolment within a two year period, otherwise application through the CATs Committee will apply.

Teaching and learning

You are guided toward mastery of critical content by a variety of learning strategies including assigned reading, case studies, group work and lectures by a variety of lecturers. An atmosphere of mutual respect and scientific enquiry is fostered throughout the course as a means to examine a body of knowledge presented in the course content. You are encouraged to explore the subject matter and further investigate by learning in practice, which will then be presented through student led seminars, self directed learning and using the discussion forum on the VLE ( blackboard).

Entry requirements

A registered nurse ‘normally’ working in general practice or primary care with the support of their employer or an allied health professional with a recorded professional qualification working at a point of first contact, with the support of their employer

60 credits at level 5
