This module is suitable for health care professionals working in a variety of primary, acute and critical settings who wish to advance their practice in leading teams of practitioners
Overview
This module will enable a critical understanding of the requirements for effective commissioning and governance of clinical services and for leading the delivery and evaluation of health care. Application of principles learnt will be made to your practice environment and will assist you to effectively lead others in the pursuit of continuous improvement.
Content
This module will explore;
- Examination of changes within health care resulting from the transformational agenda and its impact on the work environment
- Links between commissioning services to meet the needs of the community and models of service delivery
- Health expenditure and health outcomes.
- Risk in health care: legal and ethical aspects of risk assessment and management.
- The role of leadership in human resource management
- Understanding people; motivation, power and influence; working in groups, developing successful teams; performance management and professional development; conflict management.
- Areas of management relating to health services, with an emphasis on leadership, and the concept of the learning organisation.
What will I learn?
On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:
- Discuss the nature of leadership and its application to operational management within the NHS
- Critically analyse the relationship between health commissioning and the availability of resources through the examination of contemporary issues in healthcare
- Appraise and critically reflect upon the approaches and models of quality in health care, with particular reference to clinical governance, risk management and patient safety.
- Critically appraise the development of self-awareness and personal leadership style in effectively leading teams.
Teaching and learning
Topic presentations will introduce you to the context and principles of leadership in health care. Student focussed activities through discussions, VLE and student-led presentations, and the linking of critical thinking and reflection, will facilitate independent and autonomous learning. The opportunity to explore issues with the peer group will enable you to develop a critical insight into aspects of the content and its relationship to practice.
The case study chosen for the assignment will provide you with the opportunity to reflect on how well current practice in the work area ensures the highest level of clinical effectiveness and to evaluate the role of the leader in its achievement.
Entry requirements
- Registered professional qualification (e.g. nursing)
- 60 level 6 credits (or equivalent)
- Normally a minimum of 2 years experience in a relevant clinical area
- Support of the clinical manager and a suitably qualified mentor/assessor
- Opportunity to work outside usual clinical area, if necessary, to gain specific clinical competence
