This module is suitable for people working in all areas of health and social care, within NHS, Local Authority and Third Sector organisations.

Overview

This module will enable you to develop expertise in and a critical understanding of the process of project management in specific practice environments. Organisational and service change will be appreciated within the context of strategic leadership. This will enable you to contribute to strategic thinking in the development of professional practice and in the realisation of initiatives at a local level.

Content

This module will explore;

  • Organisations – guiding philosophy and image
  • Organisational: culture (core beliefs and values); climate; purpose (mission) and vision
  • The development of a strategic vision and focus
  • Major theories and styles of leadership
  • The Project Management process
  • Team membership and group development
  • Developing bids for projects
  • Monitoring progress and evaluating outcomes

What will I learn?

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:

  1. Critically explore the strategic context in the development of professional policy and practice.
  2. Produce a project proposal for an original practice initiative and evaluate the feasibility of its realisation within the existing organisational and policy climate and culture.
  3. Critically evaluate current research on leadership theory and practice and relate findings to the development and implementation of practice strategies.
  4. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the nature of change and its application to the student’s practice context.
  5. Evaluate the project management process and its role in the successful implementation of initiatives at a local level.

Teaching and learning

Topic presentations will introduce you to the context and principles of leadership, change and project management. Student-focussed activities, in the form of action learning sets, will encourage critical reading and thinking about the contexts and complexities of leadership in diverse environments. Participation in class activities, whether lectures or the learning set, is therefore a vital part of the learning process.

The assignment will encourage you to think critically about the potential for and implications of leadership for specific project management, within your organisation, in the current work environment.

Entry requirements

  • Registered professional qualification (e.g., nursing, public health, social work, policy development)
  • 60 level 6 credits (or equivalent)
  • Normally a minimum of 2 years experience in a relevant practice are
