Is this course suitable for me?

This module is suitable for anyone working within mental health services that meet the necessary criteria and have the support of their organisation.

Overview

A common complaint is often heard within mental health services that there is a need for alternative treatment methods other than medication as a first choice. This module will provide the opportunity for participants to develop Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Psychosocial Intervention skills to meet the expressed needs of service users whilst also reflecting policy directives in providing talking therapies.

Content

This module will enable you to develop a critical understanding of the underpinning values and principles of such interventions whilst also enhancing your own individual skills. You will be expected to deliver evidence-based interventions and to evaluate your clinical outcomes.

The content will focus on critical analysis of assessment theory and practice; assessment of mental health problems; treatment approaches ranging from psychosocial interventions; considerations to be addressed in working with families; counselling/solution focused therapy; and cognitive behavioural therapy.

What will I learn?

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an increased understaning and competence in assessing mental health problems, their management and selection of appropriate therapeutic interventions.
  2. Critically debate the theory and principles of talking therapies and have an awareness underpinning research evidence.
  3. Evaluate strategies aimed at reducing risk in people presenting with mental health problems and show an understanding of the need for evidence/research based practice.
  4. Critically analyse and justify the range of interventions aimed at reducing the bio-psycho-social impact of mental health problems.
  5. Debate in depth the efficacy and fitness for purpose of common/standardised assessment tools e.g. Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Impact of Events Scales (IES).

Teaching and learning

This will vary from didactic to facilitative approaches; the methods adopted will range from lectures, seminar discussions, videos, role-play exercises and joint project working and seminar presentations by students. Visiting speakers may be invited according to need and expertise. You will also be encouraged to adopt responsibility for your own learning. There can also be dialogue via email and phone as mutually agreed. The use of the internet will also be encouraged as a central feature of current information sources.

You will be expected to produce a reflective assignment of 4000 words (+ or – 10%) that conveys a depth of understanding of key issues and concepts relating to interventions for practice.

Entry requirements

We’ll be looking for a minimum of six months’ post-registration experience within a relevant area of practice.

For Level 6 (3) study you’ll need 120 credits at Level 5 (2) or equivalent.
