This short 30 credit module is suitable for all registered health care practitioners working in an intensive care unit, who wish to develop their skills and knowledge within this area of practice.
Overview
This module represents a short course for health care practitioners to study the care of patients requiring intensive care treatment. It is designed to provide you with the opportunity of developing your knowledge and skills in caring for the critically ill patient with multiple organ dysfunction.
Content
- The holistic care and management of patients who are critically ill within the intensive care environment and suffering from a range of biochemical and physiological derangements.
- Analysis of the critical care environment on the patient, family and carers.
- Multi disciplinary team working and its effects upon patient experiences.
What will I learn?
On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:
- Critically analyse the pathophysiology of derangements that precipitate shock and multi-organ dysfunction that require advanced monitoring.
- Critically analyse the decision making process within a legal and ethical framework and its effects upon the patient, family and carers.
- Draw upon evidence based practice to critically evaluate the interventions used to support or correct homeostatic balance
- Critically evaluate the effectiveness of continuation of care activities for those recovering from acute/ chronic illness in critical care
- Demonstrate competency in the holistic care of the critically ill patient and all carers.
The 30 credits gained from this module can also be used towards a ‘Top Up’ Degree by enrolling on the BSc (Hons) Health Care Practice (Intensive Care).
