Is this course suitable for me?

This faculty offers the opportunity for suitably qualified students to register for an MPhil or PhD degree by research. The criteria for selection is based on relevant experience, ability to undertake a higher degree and appropriate supervision.

The nature of a research degree is such that the student will work independently on a predefined project of his/her own choice.

Overview

In the early stages of the degree considerable time is given to the proposal and planning so that the student can have the confidence to continue the research process through to graduation. Buckinghamshire New University offers a generic training in research methodology and the faculty supplements this with specific training as required. Each student is given the appropriate support in terms of hardware (eg. a PC) and software (eg. Endnote, SPSS, NViro) to enable him/her to work efficiently. Students regularly attend internal research seminars where they not only present their own work but also learn from others. Peer review is an important component of the research culture with the centre with each student being given a mentor.

Currently, the main areas offered by the faculty are:

  • Cardiovascular Health
  • Health Psychology and Social Sciences
  • Practice Development
  • Telehealth
  • Teaching and Learning

The design of a higher degree thesis in this faculty is to produce a series of stages which are in themselves complete. One of the benefits of this is that the individual stage can be disseminated prior to the completion of the degree. All our students take this opportunity and the faculty supports them to attend conferences etc. Most students gain a variety of new skills as part of their studies. These range from experiental techniques, clinical experiences through to research and writing skills. A number of our students have achieved distinction in receiving external awards and have presented at prestigious conferences. In addition to this many students have undertaken research work with individuals of eminence.

Further opportunities

All PhD students have been appointed to senior postions following graduation and have found their studies gave them a distinct advantage in the job market. The skills they have obtained as part of the course have provided a bredth of career opportunities including clinical research, lecturing and technical posts.
