Is this course suitable for me?
This course is of interest to anyone working in the areas of preventative health, fitness and well being associated environments. This includes sports science, gyms, mental health and community agencies, primary healthcare and leisure professionals and practitioners working in established areas where the focus of the client group is on exercise and well being. This course will appeal to a range of wellness professionals and practitioners wanting to progress their expertise to (Master’s) level enabling them to seek work across the health exercise and well being sectors. It will benefit those who are looking to extend their educational /academic skills and knowledge in relation to Health Exercise and Wellbeing, and will contribute to continuing professional development.
Overview
The course adopts a cross disciplinary approach to studying health exercise and well being. It will explore issues around Health and Well being, using multiple theoretical perspectives drawn from sports science and nutrition, applied social sciences, public health policy and health sciences. The course adopts a modular structure which is related to the work related needs of students.
Students will be able to develop research skills in their particular area of interest and will be encouraged to contribute to the body of knowledge in that particular topic and will be encouraged to relate this to client focussed practice, through the work based and related assessment structure, this enhancing practice and employability.
The course will be delivered either part-time over two years or full-time over one year with a combination of face to face contact, independent study and distance learning opportunities
Structure
There will be three exit points:
- Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits)
- Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits)
- MSc (180 credits)
Content
Bio Psychosocial Influences on Health and Well-being (30 credits)
Indicative content:
- exploring concepts and theories around the body from different perspectives-psycho-social and cultural- concepts of health and wellness
- the body in society –media influences in health and well being
- social construction of the body in health and wellness
- physiology/biomechanics (ergonomics)
- physiology of wellness
- applied pharmacology
- communicating Health and Wellness –role of public health
- well being and work place
Enabling Health and Well-being (30 credits)
Indicative content:
- researching public health and wellness policies and professional practice
- inclusion/engagement policies
- applied epidemiology
- health psychology, surveillance and support
- models of health promotion/enabling
- Enabling well-being in special population groups
- Sport and exercise in health and wellbeing
Current Issues in Health and Well-being and Communitites (30 credits)
Indicative content:
- children: health and wellbeing, health needs; youth community and well being and inclusion
- risk and lifestyle in health and well-being
- education and relationship to health and well being across the lifespan
- leadership and management in health and well-being; professional and ethical issues
- corporate (occupational) wellness; includes management perspective/responsibility: new government agenda
- well-being in the workplace: middle age
- well-being and inclusion: old age
- special groups: gender, ethnicity, mental health, special populations
- dance/outdoor pursuits – aspects of health and well- being
Optional module – (30 credits)
This will be chosen from the University’s Masters portfolio eg:
- lifestyle and nutrition for health exercise and well-being
- coaching and mentoring for health exercise and well-being
- research methods (this will be mandatory for students without previous experience of research methods)
Other optional modules from Masters programmes will be available, including:
- MSc Health, Exercise and Rehabilitation,
- MSc Community Psychology
- MSc Child and Adolescent Studies
MSc in Health, Exercise and Wellbeing will be awarded on successful completion of the requirements for the postgraduate diploma above and a 60 credit dissertation.
Entry requirements
Applicants would normally have achieved 2.1 in a relevant degree, e.g. in related areas such as health, sport science, youth and community studies, social sciences , nursing occupational health , and for example; outdoor sports, complementary therapy, mental health, art therapy, dance. Alternatively, candidates with professional fitness sector qualifications and directly relevant work experience will be considered..For those working in the wellbeing industry for non-native speakers of English: IELTS 6.0 overall, 6.0 in writing is required
