Is this course suitable for me?

This module is suitable for health care professionals who are seeking to develop their knowledge and understanding of research and its use in developing evidence based.

Overview

The aim of this module is to enable you to critically evaluate research and its contribution to evidence-based specialist practice.

What will I learn?

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to explore:

  1. The process of conducting an extended literature review, and its value in generating evidence for practice.
  2. The promotion of effective practice, in the light of current Department of Health strategies to promote clinical effectiveness.
  3. A range of both quantitative and qualitative research designs including, randomised controlled trials and other experimental approaches; surveys; grounded theory; ethnography; phenomenology; action research and case studies.
  4. The research process including the research question; literature review; ethical issues, sampling strategies; methods of data collection; issues of reliability, validity, and the ‘trustworthiness’ of data; data analysis.
  5. The dissemination and utilisation of research in clinical practice.

Lectures will provide theoretical, methodological and other factual information relevant to community health care research. The lecture will be supported by discussion, student led seminars and small group work. This will also provide an appropriate forum for critical analysis of specific research papers, the paper’s relevance to practice, and issues surrounding implementation.

Entry requirements

  • Registered professional qualification
  • 60 credits at level 5
  • Normally a minimum of 6 months experience in a relevant clinical area
