Is this course suitable for me?
This module is suitable for health care professionals who are involved in management and care for people who have limited life expectancy irrespective of diagnosis.
Overview
Healthcare professionals caring for patients with a life limiting illness such as cancer, heart failure and neurological conditions face many challenges. These include the need to address patients’ physical, psychological, social and spiritual concerns whilst working in a health care system focused on efficiency, evidenced-based practice and government directives. The importance of the patient’s and professional carers’ affective domains are acknowledged; awareness and sensitivity to this area will be heightened by appropriate teaching methods. Theoretical content will be balanced with practice-based experience and you will be encouraged to bring relevant issues for discussion and debate. Therefore, the aim of this module is to promote opportunities for you to expand and synthesise knowledge, evidence and practice in the quest for a sensitive delivery of excellence in end of life care.
Content
This module will explore;
• Death in modern society including attitudes to death, cultural influences on attitude
• The social context of end of life care, the medicalisation of death and organisational structure and challenges
• Grief, loss and bereavement within our society what is the role of the health care professional?
• Different dying trajectories.
• Pain and symptom management at the end of life.
• Evidence based care at end of life and the challenges regarding research in this area.
• Ethical issues at end of life
• National Frameworks, political drivers and influences on end of life care.
What will I learn?
On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:
- Identify and critically evaluate the complexities and challenges in end of life care.
- Promote high quality care through critical examination of current practice, literature, and philosophy in relation to end of life care.
- Analyse and critically appraise the principles, policies, and frameworks that underpin end of life care.
Teaching and learning
This module will consist of diverse teaching and learning strategies whilst being aware of the sensitive and emotive nature of the subject. This will therefore include taught lectures, student led seminars, group work, discussion and debate, role play and sculpting, and web-based learning. You will be encouraged to share and reflect on practice and management decisions based on clinical situations. Networking and exploration of wider palliative care and end of life forums will also be promoted.
Entry requirements
- Registered professional qualification (e.g. nursing)
- 60 level 6 credits (or equivalent)
- Normally a minimum of 2 years experience in a relevant clinical area
- Support of the clinical manager and a suitably qualified mentor/assessor
- Opportunity to work outside usual clinical area, if necessary, to gain specific clinical competence
