Is this course suitable for me?
Enabling Learners modules have been developed in conjunction with service users, carers, employers and practitioners and are designed to enable those who are working with students or learners in health, social care, social work or community work practice settings to gain knowledge, skills and values in relation to work-based practice education.
Overview
‘Introduction to Enabling Learning and Mentoring’ (15 credits)
This module will provide opportunities for practitoners to develop the basic knowledge of adult learning and the skills and values required in contributing to the teaching and assessment of pre-qualifying students and other learners in the workplace. Participants must have the opportunity to supervise and or mentor a student or other learner in the workplace and to make a contribution to assessment.
Alternatively,
‘Enabling Learning and Mentoring’(30 credits)
This module is provided for those who wish to develop more in-depth skills in working with learners and provides the basis for those who wish to go on to take the full ‘Practice Educator Award’. Practitoners will take on responsibility as an assessor for a pre-qualifying social work student and will have the opportunity to study specific teaching and assessment methods and skills such as an introduction to running small group workshops and working effectively with struggling and failing students.
For social workers, these inter-professional modules form part of the ‘Specialist Level’ Awards in accordance with the General Social Care Council’s new framework for post-qualifying training and can be taken as ‘stand-alone’ modules or as part of the full ‘Specialist Award’ in either work with Adults or Children and Families.
The full social work specialist level awards form part of two inter-professional post-qualifying degree programmes, the BA Practice Development (this will be particularly attractive to those who hold a professional social work qualification and wish to ‘top-up’ their exisiting Dip H.E) or the ‘Graduate Diploma Practice Development’ (for those with a professional social work qualification who already hold a relevant degree).
Structure
All modules are taught on an inter-professional basis with University–based learning during the first part of the course and support in practice settings from an experienced P.Q Practice Educator during the period of the student placement. Teaching and learning is based on interactive work-shops.
The assessment consists of:
• An audit of the practice placement
• A range of practice-based material from working with students and learners. Including evidence of planning, teaching and assessment.
• A direct observation of supervision
• A reflective essay
Teaching and learning
Teaching and Learning will be based on interactive work shops and assessment will consist of a combination of academic and practice-based material.
Further opportunities
With the introduction of a new Practice Educator Development Framework and Enabling Others Plus criteria for teaching and assessing final year social work students it is possible that there may be some additional opportunities introduced in the near future at the University for those wishing to progress in relation to practice education.
