Is this course suitable for me?

This module is suitable for any health care practitioner wishing to develop his/her clinical practice and make a difference to patient care.

Overview

This work based learning module provides the health care practitioner with the opportunity to focus on and develop an aspect of clinical practice to enhance their ability to provide skilled, effective, evidence-based, patient-focused care. It will enable the student to consider and apply relevant concepts that may derive from pathophysiology, biochemistry, pharmacology or technological issues.

Content

The contents of this module will be individualised, according to your needs. With the guidance of the module leader and your clinical mentor, you will put together a unique programme of events and activities which will be directed to enhancing your knowledge and skills, based on your individual self-appraisal and your personal development plan (PDP), this will be drawn up in a learning contract.

You will be encouraged to identify areas of your clinical practice where you would benefit from having increased understanding of key concepts of associated biology/pathology/biochemistry/pharmacology or technology and will be supported to identify and assimilate the required knowledge.

What will I learn?

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:

  1. Critically analyse and evaluate their level of knowledge and skills in relation to their chosen area of clinical care.
  2. Critically analyse how key concepts such as pathophysiology, biochemistry, pharmacology and/or technology support practice and identify how care may be enhanced.
  3. Demonstrate enhanced ability to critically challenge care through the application of the evidence-base supporting practice in their chosen area.
  4. Demonstrate progression of ability to perform clinical skills and deliver care in their chosen sphere of clinical practice and share findings with others to enable adjustment in care.

The 30 credits gained from this module can also be used towards a ‘Top Up’ Degree by enrolling on the BSc (Hons) Health Care Practice. In order to complete this degree you can automatically transfer these credits on enrolment within a two year period, otherwise application through the CATs Committee will apply.

Knowledge and skills framework (KSF)

This module will address elements of the following KSF’s dimensions:

Communication; Personal and people development; Heath safety and security; Service improvement; Quality, Equality and diversity; Health & well being (1 – 8)

Teaching and learning

Assessment Strategy:

The assignment will enable the student to explicate and critically examine the different types of knowledge that inform and determine clinical practice in their own specialist setting.

Learning Contract:

Compulsory completion of a learning contract, identifying personal objectives related to a specific area of practice development, this will be verified by their clinical mentor and reflection on achievements of the learning outcomes. On completion of this contract, students will evaluate the learning process through a reflective essay critically analysing the chosen aspect of care and the learning that has taken place.
Midway through the module students will attend a study day and present a seminar to their colleagues on a key concept that underpins the chosen aspect of clinical practice. This will be followed up by an associated seminar paper to analyse the theoretical base for this.
