Is this course suitable for me?

This module is such that it may be of interest to established professionals in a range of professions. This may include: nursing/health visiting/midwifery; social work; police; psychotherapy; medicine and outreach/engagement work. This module comprises a portion of the MSc in Child Protection and Adult Safeguarding, but is also offered as a stand-alone module. Students undertaking this module solely will be co-located with students undertaking the entire course.

Overview

This module is designed to enable you to undertake a critical analysis of the practice involved in both child protection and adult safeguarding work. It uses a flexible approach, with an expectation that you will be able to ‘tailor’ the assessments to your specific area of practice, or work role. There will be an exploration of the communication styles that are used within the challenging context of safeguarding work, as well as the wider policy and management (including theories of public sector management) context. You will also develop a comprehensive understanding of the impact of the conflicting positions of practitioners within safeguarding (for instance, the tension between risk and empowerment, or rights and safety).

Content

The module content will include a critical exploration of:

  • policy changes and context for safeguarding
  • involvement with involuntary service users
  • theories of public sector management
  • decision-making in safeguarding,
  • communication skills with vulnerable individuals
  • service user rights and advocacy
  • risk and rights – how they intersect and interplay.

The module will also focus on a critical application of multidisciplinary practice to explore case studies throughout the module. Particular attention will be paid to facilitating the capacity for reflexivity in practice.

What will I learn?

This module provides the opportunity for you to advance your critical review skills set by gaining specific competencies in:

  • policy analysis of safeguarding
  • critical analysis of a multiplicity of case studies
  • evaluation of the conflicting positions of practitioners within safeguarding work
  • multi-disciplinary engagement with a variety of safeguarding-related topics
  • interpretation and presentation of complex case studies
  • critical understanding of management theories and their position within the safeguarding arena.

On successful completion of the module you will be able to:

  • critically evaluate the policy context of safeguarding within England
  • critically analyse a variety of case studies, and develop strategies for intervening
  • develop a comprehensive understanding of the impact of public services upon service users
  • demonstrate the communication skills needed to present a critical analysis of a case study to a group of peers and facilitate discussion surrounding the salient issues
  • demonstrate a critical understanding of the role of leadership and management within safeguarding, including different management approaches, theories and their impacts.

Teaching and learning

Topic presentations, using a weekly workshop format will introduce you to the principles, and practice within the safeguarding arena in England. You will be introduced to critical practice, and the conflictual position of practitioners within safeguarding, including the multidisciplinary issues, and will be required to openly debate around the impact of this on the policy context. A hands-on approach will be adopted, which will encourage you to engage with the case studies and topics presented in a collaborative and supportive environment, including the engagement across disciplinary boundaries.

You will be assisted to develop your own assessment of your learning needs, and encouraged to use Blackboard™, and WebEx facilities. You will be encouraged to engage with the Virtual Learning Environment to access materials, and to further engage in critical debate. Lecture notes, relevant resources and interactive learning tools will enable independent learning and serve to stimulate further discussion amongst the group.

The assessment strategies employed will enable you to develop your ability to critically analyse case studies, and to present to a group of your peers, as well as to critically evaluate, and analyse a case study in written form.

Entry requirements

Applicants will normally have a relevant undergraduate degree (or educated to at least Diploma level), have experience of working in a relevant professional (or strategic) role, and can demonstrate an ability to study at Masters level.
