Is this course suitable for me?
This module is suitable for health care professionals who are involved in management and care for people in a gastrointestinal care environment.
Overview
This module aims to equip the Advanced Practitioner specialising in gastrointestinal care with the theoretical knowledge and skills to underpin further study in their chosen speciality, which will prepare the practitioner for a lead practitioner’s role.
You will be required to demonstrate an understanding in the totality of gut function, giving a systematic understanding of knowledge at the forefront of gastrointestinal nursing.
Content
This module will explore:
- an in depth knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the gut
- various gastrointestinal disorders exploring best practice in their medical management, surgical invention, drug and biological therapies
- specific gastrointestinal investigations including gut imagery, anorectal physiology, clinical investigations, histopathology
- the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care for those with gastrointestinal disorders
- the key issues of the gut in relation to the life span
- the relationship between the gut and the mind
- an appreciation of pharmacological issues in the management of gastrointestinal disorders
- the importance of nutrition and the gut
- national frameworks and political drivers and influences regarding gastrointestinal care
- professional issues in relation to advanced practice thus demonstrating innovations in practice.
What will I learn?
On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:
- critically review and synthesise leading-edge research controversies with regards the physiology and pathophysiology of gastrointestinal function
- critically evaluate research on the investigation, treatment and management of gastrointestinal disorders
- critically review the effect of pharmacology, psychology, nutrition and ageing on gut function
- integrate knowledge and skills to enable facilitation of service development for patients with gastrointestinal disorders.
Teaching and learning
This module will consist of a variety of teaching and learning strategies relevant to the broad ranging and complex nature of the subject material. This will therefore include taught lectures, student–led seminars, group work, discussion and debate, web -based learning, use of audio visual aids.
You will be encouraged to share and reflect on practice and management decisions based on clinical situations. Networking and exploration of wider critical care forums will also be promoted.
Entry requirements
- Registered professional qualification (e.g. nursing)
- 60 level 6 credits (or equivalent)
- Minimum 6 months experience in a relevant practice area
