Is this course suitable for me?
This module is suitable for health care professionals who are involved in management and care for people with a cancer diagnosis or / and require palliative care services.
Overview
Healthcare professionals who care for patients with a cancer diagnosis are constantly facing challenges engendered by continuous progress in genetics, screening, diagnostic technology, treatment and management. Such major progress in cancer detection and management, affords improved survival rates, which together with initiatives such as patient involvement, consumer choice, and other government directives, places even greater demands on the provision of quality cancer and palliative care. Therefore, the aim of this module is to promote opportunities for the student to expand and synthesise knowledge, evidence and practice in the quest for clinical excellence in cancer and palliative care.

This module will explore;
- Current and emerging cancer treatments: palliative, curative, adjuvant, surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapies, gene therapies, stem cell and bone marrow transplantation, safety issues.

- Identify, interpret and evaluate political, economic and professional influences on provision and delivery of cancer and palliative care.
- Critically examine current health promotion strategies and screening programmes for the prevention and early detection of cancer.
Teaching and learning
This module will use a variety of teaching and learning strategies relevant to the broad ranging and complex nature of the subject material. This will therefore include taught lectures, student-led seminars, group work, discussion and debate, web-based learning and the use of audio visual aids.
