Is this course suitable for me?
This module is suitable for both newly qualified and more experienced qualified social workers and forms the first part of the Post-qualifying Specialist Award. It is available as a module for those working within Children, Young People and Families or Adult settings and can be taken as a stand-alone module or as part of the Specialist Award.
The Consolidation module must usually be achieved prior to further P.Q Specialist modules but experienced candidates may wish to discuss accreditation of prior experienced and credited learning.
The Social Work Specialist Awards form part of two inter-professional post-qualifying degree programmes, the BA (Hons) Practice Development (this will be particularly attractive to those who hold a professional social work qualification and wish to ‘top-up’ their Diploma of Higher Education/Diploma in Social Work) or the ‘Graduate Diploma Practice Development’ (for those with a professional social work qualification who already have a degree).
Teaching and learning
Four half-day workshops introduce candidates to P.Q study, support their academic learning and enable them to assess and evidence their knowledge, skills, values and development needs within a specialist work setting. It provides the foundation for further post-qualifying practice and study and enables candidates and employers to evidence standards of practice. P.Q Practice Educators work with candidates and managers to enable close links with work-based learning and achievements.
The course is mapped against the C.W.D.C and Skills for Care N.Q.S.W requirements and newly qualified workers can study a combined programme during their first year as qualified workers.
Teaching and learning is based on interactive workshops with members of the University’s Specialist Lecturers and work-based sessions with a P.Q Practice Educator. The Practice Educator can be a member of the University team or be provided by the employer.
Assessment consists of two work-based logs detailing achievements and learning needs (the first of these is not formally assessed and is used as a basis for learning) and a case study. There is a direct observation of practice and reports from the manager and practice educator.
Further opportunities
Employers can choose to run this programme ‘in-house’ and this can be provided in conjunction with programmes for NQSW’s and their supervisors.
