Overview
This module will provide an opportunity to review the historical and philosophical underpinnings in cognitive behavioural therapies and aims to develop and enhance the learners knowledge and skills related to the fundamentals of Cognitive Behavioural theory and its practice.
Content
- Assessment of client problems using the ABC model.
- Goal setting with clients and eliciting commitment from clients to change.
- Negotiating homework assignments.
- Teaching the CBT view of change.
- Exploring core skills related to disputing irrational beliefs. When and how to dispute irrational beliefs.
- The role of ‘therapeutic alliance’ in cognitive behavioural work.
What will I learn?
On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:
- Critically evaluate the essential knowledge base of cognitive behaviour therapy approaches.
- Demonstrate skills of assessment using the ABC model.
- Distinquish between healthy and unhealthy negative emotions and teach CBT view of therapeutic change.
- Critically review the effectiveness of cognitive behavioural approaches in mental health care.
- Show a critical understanding of the importance of evidence to underpin practice.
The 15 credits gained from this module can also be used towards a ‘Top Up’ Degree by enrolling on the BSc (Hons) Health Care Practice (Mental Health). In order to complete this degree you can automatically transfer these credits on enrolment within a two year period, otherwise application through the CATs Committee will apply.

Teaching and learning
A student-orientated approach will be adopted utilising reflective activities and experiential learning through the medium of interactive lectures, student led seminars, role-play, tutorials and case analysis.
Entry requirements
We’ll be looking for a minimum of six months’ post-registration experience within a relevant area of practice.
For Level 6 (3) study you’ll need 120 credits at Level 5 (2) or equivalent
