Is this course suitable for me?

This 30 credit module will be of interest to people working with young children in variety of settings such as nurseries, playgroups and health clinics.

Overview

The aim of the module is to give you the opportunity to explore the bio-psychosocial issues affecting children’s health and wellbeing in the context of current society. It will provide an added insight into the theory of the child and young person’s health and allow students to apply theoretical and conceptual frameworks to their own work setting.

Content

The effects of environment and society on health

Content will include changing demography; working mothers; increased divorce rates; older parents; multicultural effects; violence in the family; the child’s place in society and the influences of family and parenting style.

Psychological aspects of health

Content will include bullying at school; stress in education; family life; coping strategies; mental health issues.

Biological aspects of health

Considerations will include long term health problems and their effects on the child and the family.

Promoting Public Health

Content will include health promotion; inter-professional working; policy; legislation and governmental strategies; the effects of childhood education on child health and subsequent life chances.

What will I learn?

  1. Evaluate and update knowledge of theoretical perspectives of child health and wellbeing and communicate the implications for individual practice
  2. Identify and explore the range of issues affecting the health of children today
  3. Explore ethical dilemmas related to caring for children with health issues
  4. Critically analyse the effect of societal and familial influences on children’s health
  5. Critically evaluate the contribution of their own professional role to child health

Teaching and learning

Lectures initially to provide the foundation of knowledge and research. Group, colleague and tutor/student discussions, e-mail, blackboard, internet and assessment.

The assessment strategy has an important formative element focused on the presentation of case-studies from your own practice area. You will have an opportunity to present and discuss these case studies with peers and to refine your skills in applying theoretical and conceptual frameworks to issues of child health and wellbeing.

The essay will enable you to discuss and explore ethical dilemmas relating to caring for children with health issues in a variety of environments. The essay will also enable you to produce a sustained analysis of the ways in which your own professional role contributes to child health and wellbeing.

Entry requirements

Working in a practice area with minimum 6 months experience in an appropriate setting is required

  • 120 level 5 credits (or equivalent)
  • Support of your manager
  • Opportunity to work outside usual practice area, if necessary, to gain specific clinical competence
