Is this course suitable for me?

This 30 credit module is aimed at nurses and other health care practitioners working in cardiac care environments. These include; Coronary Care Units, Cardiology wards, Cardiac Surgery Units, Chest Pain Clinics and Cardiac Rehabilitation.

Overview

This module represents a short course for health care practitioners to study the care of patients with cardiac problems. The module has been developed to enable those practitioners working in the fields of cardiac and coronary healthcare to develop their knowledge, expertise and understanding in these specialist areas. Developments in technology and government policy generate a need to equip cardiac nurses and other health care practitioners with sound evidenced-based knowledge and skills to meet the changing demands of the cardiac care environment.

  • Care of patients with coronary heart disease,
  • Heart failure care,
  • Care of patients receiving PCI,
  • Care of patients receiving cardiac surgery,
  • Cardiac rehabilitation,
  • Pacemakers,
  • Valve disorders,
  • Arrhythmias,
  • Heart transplant care,
  • Cardiac anatomy
  • Pathophysiology and relevant pharmacology.

What will I learn?

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:

  1. Critically analyse the clinical assessment process and the use of effective interviewing skills and data collection in the context of patients with cardiac disorders
  2. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the underlying anatomy, pathophysiology and pharmacology which influences the management of patients with cardiac disorders.
  3. Critically appraise the relevant current evidence and specialist guidelines which relate to the therapeutic interventions used for patients with cardiac disorders.
  4. Critically appraise the ethical and legal dimensions of care in the cardiac care environment.

The 30 credits gained from this module can also be used towards a ‘Top Up’ Degree by enrolling on the BSc (Hons) Health Care Practice (Cardiac Care/Cardiothoracic Care/Critical Care). In order to complete this degree you can automatically transfer these credits on enrolment within a two year period, otherwise application through the CATs Committee will apply.

Knowledge and skills framework (KSF)

This module will address elements of the following KSF’s dimensions:

Communication; Personal and people development; Heath safety and security; Service improvement; Quality, Equality and diversity; Health & well being (1 – 8)

Teaching and learning

A range of teaching and learning, strategies will be adopted to meet your needs. They will include lectures, problem solving, critical reflection, group work, seminars, case studies and student presentations. You will be encouraged to use relevant research to discuss the evidence base for specific aspects of cardiac care.

Assessment will include a reflective essay and achievement of practice based competencies supported by two 1000 word pieces of coursework, chosen from case studies, care plans or literature review that evidence achievement of the clinical competencies.

Entry requirements

  • Registered health care practitioners with a minimum 6 months experience in a relevant cardiac care area
  • 60 Credits at level 5 (or equivalent)
  • Have the support of your clinical manager and a suitably qualified mentor/assessor
  • Opportunity to work outside usual clinical area, if necessary, to gain specific clinical competence.
