This module is suitable for practitioners working or seeking to work at advanced level in respiratory care.
Overview
This module is designed to provide you with an opportunity to develop specific skills and knowledge relating to respiratory assessment and diagnosis. It will enable the student to continue to advance their knowledge and understanding of the respiratory assessment processes, develop skills and respiratory examination and facilitate systematic and creative judgements relating to patient investigation and management. The module will encourage detailed exploration of the diagnosis and interventions of patients in acute and long term respiratory failure.
Content
This module will explore:
- Physical assessment of the respiratory system
- Identification of abnormality based on pathology of disease processes
- Epidemiological studies
- Pharmacological interventions applied to the respiratory system
- Therapeutic interventions that will include surgical techniques
- Chemotherapy and radiotherapy
- Non-ventilatory support and mechanical ventilation
- Psychological and social issues will be explored
What will I learn?
On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:
- Critically evaluate appropriate consultation processes to develop effective diagnostic skills relating to respiratory health and disease
- Demonstrate comprehensive understanding of the patho-physiological processes relating to respiratory disease.
- Develop conceptual understanding of the complexities associated with the clinical assessment process and its impact on the formulation of differential diagnosis and investigation planning.
- Critically evaluate methods of respiratory support and management and apply this to provide appropriate individualised patient care.
- Devise an individualised holistic evidence based plan of care for the management of a patient with respiratory failure
Teaching and learning
The module will be delivered using blended learning. This means you will receive course material on blackboard which you can work through at your own pace.
Key note lectures will provide new material. Group work will explore areas of development and individual tutorials may be used.
Entry requirements
- Registered professional qualification (e.g., nursing, public health, social work, policy development)
- 60 level 6 credits (or equivalent)
- Normally a minimum of 2 years experience in a relevant practice area
