This 30 credit module is suitable for health care practitioners working in adult nursing

Overview

The aim of this module is to provide you with the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills so that you provide a holistic, person centred approach to the patient journey, focusing on key concepts and components for assessing, intervention and managing care of the ill adult.

  • Physical assessment in relation to Illness trajectory-Managing acute and chronic illness
  • Nursing Theories- nursing knowledge base for practice.
  • Care management theories
  • Health Promotion
  • Legal & ethical dimensions of care management- decision making skills.
  • Interprofessional approach to assessment and intervention & care management for adults.
  • Explorations of the impact of differing care environments on assessment and management of care.

What will I learn?

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a critical knowledge and understanding of a range of concepts and theories related to clinical assessment, intervention and care management.
  2. Critically analyse the clinical assessment process and the use of effective interviewing skills, data collection and documentation techniques, using evidence-based approach to client / patient assessment.
  3. Apply skills in the nursing diagnosis and decision-making process that support therapeutic interventions and effective holistic care management of priorities and critical events that arise in delivering care appropriate to the area of practice.
  4. Critically analyse the impact of technological, therapeutic and contemporary interventions on the care of the ill adult within the area of clinical practice.
  5. Critically review the role of the nurse in promoting the health and rehabilitation of the patient within clinical practice and evaluating outcomes of care, regarding ethical and legal responsibilities of the professional practitioner within the clinical environment.

The 30 credits gained from this module can also be used towards a ‘Top Up’ Degree by enrolling on the BSc (Hons) Health Care Practice. In order to complete this degree you can automatically transfer these credits on enrolment within a two year period, otherwise application through the CATs Committee will apply.

Knowledge and skills framework (KSF)

This module will address elements of the following KSF’s dimensions:

Communication; Personal and people development; Heath safety and security; Service improvement; Quality, Equality and diversity; Health & well being (1 – 8)

Teaching and learning

The teaching methodology is work-based learning, thus there will be an emphasis on self-directed learning, with student led tutorials expected throughout the module along with the opportunity to communicate and share information through the use of VLE. You will be introduced to the key concepts of the module during induction, this is then followed by a period of WBL. You will develop and execute your learning contract with the support of the module leader and clinical mentor.

Other teaching and learning strategies that will assist you in achieving the learning outcomes and develop the key skills will include: Seminars, Case-studies, Group work, learning contract.

Entry requirements

  • Registered health care professional
  • 120 level 5 credits (or equivalent)
