Is this course suitable for me?

This course was developed in collaboration with Specialist Practitioners in Epilepsy. It aims to provide the opportunity for professionals specialising in epilepsy care to expand their knowledge and skills to provide more holistic care for people with epilepsy and their families. The course will address the biomedical basis of epilepsy, the psychological and social impact of epilepsy on the individual and family, advances in treatment modalities, inter-professional and multi-disciplinary working, risk and advances in professional practice. During the course you will be given the opportunity to visit other care environments to observe good practice and alternative approaches to care.

Overview

The aims of the courses are as follows:
Aim of the programme at Level 5: To provide an opportunity for you to investigate the cause and effects of epilepsy, its impact on the individual and their family and the skills to plan and deliver appropriate packages of care using a recognised process.
Aim of the programme at Level 6: To provide the opportunity for you to develop an in-depth knowledge of the cause and effects of epilepsy, its impact on the individual and their family and the skills to plan, deliver and critically evaluate packages of care using a recognised process.

Over the course of the 15 weeks students will study the following modules:

Contemporary Issues in Epilepsy Care Module Details (30-credit module).
At level 5: To provide the opportunity for you to investigate the cause, effects and needs of the patient/client with epilepsy and competently manage the care of the patient/client using an informed approach and application of knowledge and skills.

At level 6: To provide the opportunity for you to investigate the cause, effects and needs of the patient/client with epilepsy and to make informed, evidence based decisions regarding the management and care.

Person Focused Practice Module Details (15-credit module).
At level 5: To allow you the opportunity to observe current practices and apply the theory learnt in the classroom to the care of people with epilepsy in a variety of care settings.

At level 6: To allow you the opportunity to observe current practices and critically apply the theory learnt in the classroom to the care of people with epilepsy in a variety of care settings to promote optimum care.

Teaching and learning

A variety of teaching and learning strategies will be adopted to meet the needs of students with different levels of experience. Approaches will include lectures, seminars, problem-based learning and critical reflection. Your development on the course will be assessed by written work specific to each module. You will be supported at each level through academic tutorial support.

The overall approach to assessment of learning will include course work and assessment of competence in practice. The methods chosen are appropriate to demonstrate achievement of either the level 5 or level 6 outcomes. A range of assessments have been chosen to aid you to perform to the best of your ability with consideration of how these assessments relate theory to practice. The course is reflective of a multidisciplinary approach to care and is based on the concept of fitness for practice.

This course is undertaken as a short clinical course and can lead onto the following:

  • At level 6 it may be undertaken as part of the BSc (Hons) in Epilepsy Care.

Entry requirements

Any multidisciplinary professional working within the speciality with a minimum of six months experience.

  • For level 5 study: 120 credits at level 1 or equivalent
  • For level 6 study: 120 credits at level 2 or equivalent
