Is this course suitable for me?

The course has been planned and developed to meet the requirements of the standards and criteria for RCN accreditation of nurse practitioner programmes in higher education institutions. It has utilised the RCN Domains and Competencies for Nurse Practitioners (2007) to facilitate this process. The institution believes that nurse practitioners offer a unique service to clients and their families, operating at the boundaries between medicine and nursing. The course aims to equip these practitioners with advanced assessment, diagnostic and decision-making skills to enable them to work as autonomous professionals.

Overview

You will undertake two 15-credit modules and three 30-credit modules.

These consist of:

  • Evidence Based Practice – 15 Credits
  • Autonomous Practice 15 Credits
  • Pathophysiology and Assessment of Illness and Injury 30 Credits
  • Integrated Portfolio Practice 30 Credits

One optional module of either;

  • Independent and Supplementary Prescribing 45 Credits or
  • Clinical Judgement, Diagnostic Reasoning and Pharmacology. 30 Credits

Clinical practice

You will spend the equivalent of at least two full days per week supervised practice in order to develop the core competencies and achieve the learning outcomes for the course. In order to protect clients, students attending the course will undertake assessment of the client and make clinical decisions under the direct supervision of a mentor.

Teaching and learning

The course will consist of a variety of teaching learning and assessment methods including lectures, seminars, discussions, VLE, demonstrations and group work.

Assessment strategies include essay writing, reflection of an audio-taped interview/health history consultation, patient profile, examination, portfolio assessment and the objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) to examine physical assessment and differential diagnosis skills

Entry requirements

  • Current professional registration on parts 1 of the Professional Register.
