Is this course suitable for me?
This 30 credit module is suitable for health care practitioners working in a variety of acute and critical care settings who wish to advance their practice in working with patients who require acute respiratory care.
Overview
Changes in government policy and advances in technology are increasing the complexity of care required by patients with respiratory conditions. Such developments generate a need to equip practitioners working within this field with sound evidenced-based knowledge and skills to meet the changing demands of the environment in which these patients are cared for. By critically evaluating the care they deliver, students undertaking this module will gain confidence, and enhance their knowledge skills and attributes to care competently for patients with acute respiratory problems.
This module aims to provide students with the opportunity to:
- Develop the knowledge and skills required to provide competent, effective, evidence based care for patients with acute respiratory problems.
- Develop a critical approach to acute clinical care, health promotion, rehabilitation, ethical decision-making and palliative interventions within acute respiratory care environments.
Content
- Concepts of specialist and advanced practice in acute respiratory care.
- Determinants of respiratory disease, including gender, age, ethnicity, culture, socio economic status and associated pathology.
- Application of respiratory anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and technology to the care of patients with acute respiratory problems.
- Respiratory physical assessment skills, interpretation of diagnostic tests and investigations.
- Assessment and management of patients with acute (or acute on chronic) respiratory failure.
- Scheduled or unscheduled care for patients needing clinical care following surgery or acute episodes of respiratory illness (e.g. respiratory failure, asthma, obstructive and restrictive pulmonary disease, tuberculosis, lung cancer, acute respiratory distress syndrome, neuromuscular weakness, respiratory infections, pleural disorders, cystic fibrosis.)
- Key clinical skills: airway management, oxygen therapy, nebulised drug administration, arterial blood gas interpretation, non-invasive ventilation, mechanical ventilation, pleural drains, thoracic surgical care, tracheostomy care, suctioning.

- Professional issues relating to acute respiratory care: national service frameworks, NICE guidelines, integrated care pathways, risk management, multi disciplinary collaboration, primary and secondary care interface.
What will I learn?
On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:
- Critically analyse the assessment and decision-making process that supports effective care planning for patients with acute respiratory problems.
- Critically evaluate the evidence base supporting effective technical, therapeutic and pharmacological interventions and underpinning pathophysiology relevant to patients with acute respiratory problems.
- Critically appraise the ethical and legal dimensions of care in the acute respiratory environment.
- Demonstrate critical application of the current issues involved in caring for patients with acute respiratory problems with regard to local and national policies, guidelines and agendas.
- Demonstrate ability to perform clinical skills and competency in caring for a range of patients with acute respiratory problems.
The 30 credits gained from this module can also be used towards a ‘Top Up’ Degree by enrolling on the BSc (Hons) Health Care Practice (Respiratory Care).
